The evolving needs of UK roads

Building resilience into tomorrow’s roads, today.

Harsher weather. Tighter Budgets. Heavier Vehicles. Is our infrastructure ready?

UK roads are facing growing pressure from heavier and more frequent traffic, changing weather patterns, ageing infrastructure and years of short-term maintenance.

Highway ironwork sits at the centre of these challenges. The way gully gratings and access covers are specified, selected and installed can determine whether an installation provides lasting performance or becomes another recurring point of failure.

Our new whitepaper brings together industry research, expert insight and the views of local authorities and industry leaders to examine what must change, and why a right-first-time approach matters.

“Even the best products will fail to perform as they are meant to if they are poorly installed.”
Steve Carmody, highway infrastructure consultant and CIHT board trustee

Discover how traffic, climate, funding pressures and installation quality are changing the demands placed on UK roads and highway ironwork.

The report includes:

  • findings from our survey of local authorities and contractors;
  • insight from highway, asset-management and industry specialists;
  • the common causes of premature ironwork failure;
  • practical guidance on specification, materials and installation;
  • the case for whole-life thinking and long-term road resilience.

Key issues shaping the future of ironwork installation

From increasing traffic loads to growing environmental pressures, the long-term performance of ironwork is being challenged like never before. Explore the key factors driving failure, whole life cost and the need for a more durable, right-first-time approach.

Traffic is changing

Vehicle weights and traffic volumes continue to increase, placing greater stress on ironwork installations. Dynamic loading, braking forces and vibration can accelerate deterioration when installations are not properly supported or levelled.

Climate is a growing factor

More intense rainfall, standing water and thermal movement are contributing to faster carriageway deterioration. Small installation weaknesses can quickly develop into significant failures under changing environmental conditions.

The industry view

Local authorities, utilities and contractors continue to face growing pressure around maintenance backlogs, budgets and disruption. At the same time, there is increasing demand for longer-lasting and more sustainable installation approaches.

A shift in mentality

The industry is moving towards a right-first-time approach focused on durability, whole life cost and reducing repeat intervention. Better installation practice plays a critical role in achieving this shift.

The pressure on UK roads is increasing

Roads and the ironwork within them are being exposed to conditions that are changing faster than many specifications, maintenance practices and installation methods.

What "right first time" actually means

Long-term performance does not come from one product feature or one installation step. It comes from making the right decisions throughout the process.

1. Specify for the real environment

Consider more than a load class. Traffic type, traffic intensity, vehicle speed, location, wheel paths, drainage conditions and the heaviest likely loading event all influence the demands placed on an installation.

2. Select capable ironwork

Choose access covers and gratings designed for the intended application and capable of maintaining stability and performance under repeated real-world loading.

3. Use compatible materials

Specify suitable bedding and surround materials, applied at the correct depth and allowed to achieve the required strength before the road is reopened.

4. Install with control and consistency

Prepare the chamber properly, level the frame accurately, provide continuous support and follow a repeatable installation method.

Gully grating with failure of the surround

Failure rarely starts with the ironwork alone

Good ironwork can still fail if the structure beneath it, the materials around it or the installation method are not right.

Common causes of premature failure include:

  • an uneven, damaged or unstable chamber;
  • inaccurate frame levelling; insufficient bedding depth;
  • inappropriate or non-compliant mortar;
  • incomplete support beneath the frame;
  • inadequate curing before reopening to traffic;
  • installation shortcuts driven by time or cost pressure.

Once movement begins, repeated traffic loading can accelerate wear across the seat, frame, bedding and paved surround. What began as an installation problem can become a recurring road-maintenance problem.

The report describes inadequate chamber preparation, incorrect levelling, non-compliant bedding, inadequate curing and time pressures as key causes of installation failure.

The cost of repeat intervention

An access cover or gully grating can represent only a small part of the overall installation cost. When an installation fails, the cost grows through repeat labour, replacement materials, permits, traffic management, road closures and disruption.

Reactive repairs may address the immediate safety concern, but repeatedly returning to the same location consumes budgets that could otherwise support planned maintenance.

The carbon cost

Every repeat intervention also carries an environmental cost. More products, more bedding and surfacing materials, more transport, more plant and further traffic management all add embodied carbon.

A right-first-time approach is therefore about more than product life. It is about reducing avoidable work throughout the asset’s life.

How Wrekin supports a right-first-time approach

We do more than supply a cover or grating. We help customers make better decisions across specification, selection and installation.

FrameSet - Helping to get it right first time

FrameSet brings the specification, ironwork, levelling approach, bedding materials, guidance and installation support together as one engineered method.

Poor levelling, inconsistent bedding and unsupported frames are among the most common reasons ironwork installations fail.

Wrekin’s FrameSet system is designed to address these issues by giving contractors and asset owners a clearer, repeatable installation method.

The system supports compatible high-performance bedding materials, integrated lifting provision and accessible installation guidance, helping crews deliver more consistent structural support and a reliable finished installation.
