Clear opening is a critical compliance and safety factor for manhole covers. Under BS EN 124, it’s defined as “the largest circular area that can be inscribed within the frame opening.” If a projection within the frame or hinge encroaches into that space, it reduces safe access and may fall short of BS EN 124 and CD 534 requirements. This can create real hazards for operatives entering confined spaces.
