New Whitepaper: The Evolving Needs of UK Roads

A key focus of the whitepaper is the role that highway ironwork, including manhole covers and gully gratings, plays in maintaining a safe and resilient road network. As road surfaces continue to deteriorate and short-term repair strategies become increasingly common, ironwork is often subjected to greater stress, leading to premature failures, repeat interventions and increased disruption for road users.

The report argues that a shift towards higher-quality, built-to-last solutions, combined with effective installation practices, can help improve the long-term performance of highways infrastructure. By extending asset life, reducing maintenance requirements and minimising repeat works, infrastructure owners can improve network resilience while also supporting sustainability objectives.

Our research also revealed significant concern across the sector about the future readiness of UK infrastructure. More than half of respondents to our survey said they do not believe the UK's current infrastructure is prepared for changing traffic trends, while almost all respondents felt that design and maintenance standards are not keeping pace with increasingly extreme weather conditions, including heavier rainfall and hotter summers.
